Spectroscope with 1000 lines/mm Diffraction Grating and
Logitech Camera

Images from PC (Windows 10) Camera App

For the Diffraction Grating, 1000 lines/mm see Home Science Tool.

We have built an ad hoc Spectroscope using the 1000 lines/mm Diffraction Grating, a Logitech C270 HD Webcam, 720p, Widescreen HD Video Camera, a ULINE Box and simple clips to hold the diffraction grating slide and electric tape. Using an Eisco Labs Premium Spectrum Tube Power Supply and Eisco Neon, Hydrogen, Argon and Xeon Spectrum Tubes we capture the spectrum of the various sources.

Using the Spectroscope is very useful when doing flame tests since the experiment frees up a hand and the experimenter can focus on the flame while the camera is recording. Later the camera recording can be viewed and the spectrum of the flame test extracted and edited. Contrast this approach with using a spectroscope which has to be viewed through the eye while the flame test is carried out ( requiring two people).
